Mehdi Behbudi
Sound Performance / 2020
Concept
In Behbudi’s view, every fragile object contains a sound within it — a sound that becomes free and audible only at the moment of breaking:
“In every breakable thing, a sound is stored that becomes free and audible only when broken.”
The piece begins with the selection of a fragile object — a porcelain plate, a ceramic bowl, or a piece of glass.
The performer holds it before their body, then suddenly lets it fall onto a hard surface — concrete or asphalt.
At that precise moment, the music begins.
Performance Process
Each broken fragment has its own unique size and shape, which determine its specific pitch and timbre.
Together, these fragments form a random musical scale born from the act of breaking.
The performer strikes, slides, or kicks the pieces across the ground.
Rhythm and dynamics emerge from the interaction between physical forces — the strength of each strike, the texture of the surface, and the irregular shapes of the shards — combined with the performer’s partial control.
The piece continues as long as new sonic relationships and melodic gestures are discovered among the fragments.

(World Premiere):
Masao Ono.

In Mehdi Behbudi’s artistic practice, sound is never merely an audible phenomenon — it is a way of thinking the world through listening. In Break Dance (2020), sound emerges not from a musical instrument, but from the destruction of a fragile object. Breaking becomes an act of revelation: when the object’s material integrity collapses, another world of resonance opens.
Behbudi encapsulates the philosophical essence of the work in one sentence:
“In every breakable thing, a sound is stored that becomes free and audible only when broken.”
Here, destruction is not loss but liberation — a release of hidden sonic potential and the transformation of material failure into acoustic life.
Aesthetically, Break Dance reverses the classical idea of the musical instrument. In conventional music, the instrument symbolizes control, continuity, and structure. In Behbudi’s piece, the instrument is destroyed so that sound may exist. The act of breaking becomes a form of reverse creation — annihilation as inception.
This paradox is the poetic core of the work: what is usually understood as an end becomes the beginning of experience. Behbudi’s performance thus raises a profound ontological question:
Must creation always begin with construction — or can it emerge from disintegration?
Behbudi treats sound not as abstraction, but as material. His approach recalls the experimental tradition of Sound Art, where artists like Pierre Schaeffer, John Cage, and Lucio Fontana explored the boundaries between noise, object, and perception.
In Break Dance, sound has weight and texture. Each fragment of the broken object possesses its own pitch, determined by its size, shape, and surface. None of these sounds are precomposed; they are the outcome of physics and chance. The result is a living music of accidents, where disorder produces harmony, and chaos transforms into form.
The performer’s body serves as mediator between material and sound. The act begins with the performer holding the object before the body — calmly, almost ceremonially — then letting it fall. Once shattered, the performer interacts with the fragments, striking, pushing, or sliding them on the ground.
The body initiates sound, yet cannot fully control it. The resonance and movement of each shard depend on gravity, friction, and the texture of the surface. The performer becomes both agent and witness, embodying the condition of the contemporary human: active, yet unable to command the outcome.
Break Dance is built on the dialectic of intention and accident — a choreography of control and unpredictability. Behbudi demonstrates that beauty can arise from the unforeseen, from the erratic rhythm of fragments.
Listening, in this work, is not passive reception but active openness. The audience is invited to hear what is normally excluded from the musical domain: scraping, cracking, sliding, silence. Break Dance replaces the aesthetics of beauty with the ethics of attention — an invitation to hear reality as it is, rather than as we wish it to be.
Culturally, the work reflects on the human relationship with objects in an age of mass production and disposability. The deliberate breaking of a domestic object in public transforms destruction into meaning. Behbudi reclaims the broken — the discarded — as a source of aesthetic experience.
Philosophically, Break Dance aligns with the notion that destruction and creation are intertwined. Just as decomposition in nature enables regeneration, artistic creation, too, may require the courage to dismantle, to unmake, to fracture — so that new forms of perception can emerge.
Though not overtly political, Break Dance carries a subtle politics of sound. To break an object in public space — to interrupt the urban silence with the sharp, uncontrolled resonance of shards — is to resist the imposed order of harmony. The piece enacts a sonic insurrection: the right to make noise, to disrupt, to be heard.
In a world that values control, polish, and predictability, Behbudi’s work honors the power of disorder — the dignity of rupture.
The work is inseparable from its site. It requires a hard surface — asphalt, concrete, or stone — that can receive and amplify the impact. The ground becomes the hidden instrument of the piece. Each location alters the resonance; each performance creates a distinct acoustic and visual landscape.
The first presentation of Break Dance took place in the online Iranian Night 11 (Yarava Modern Orchestra, 2020). Its subsequent performance at the Haus Wittgenstein in Vienna (2021), curated by Georg Nussbaumer and performed by Masao Ono, recontextualized the work within a European philosophical setting — a house once devoted to logical clarity now resonating with the sound of breaking.
Ultimately, Break Dance is less about producing sound than about listening to the act of emergence itself. Behbudi transforms the ordinary event of breaking into a metaphysical gesture.
He reminds us that within every collapse lies a melody; within every destruction, an opening.
In his universe, to break is to begin — to let the hidden voice of the world be heard.
