LAST BUT NOT LEAST: SUPPER 2 (2021)
is an interactive sound event and instruction-based score (Event Score) rooted in Fluxus aesthetics and the philosophy of existential probability. In this work, Mehdi Behbudi dissolves the boundary between a routine social banquet and a musical performance. Around a table set for ten participants, plates filled with food are interspersed with plates containing sound-making objects—such as bicycle bells, air horns, and noisemakers. The guests are granted absolute agency: they may eat, generate sound, or remain silent.
The conceptual core of the installation rests on a deceptively simple yet profound ontological premise: "Any supper can be our last supper. It’s a matter of probability, but it’s very serious." Conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic within the Gate of Tehran residency (2021) in the Hyrcanian forests, the work unfolded quietly through daily interventions. By placing instruction postcards behind the doors of residents' rooms each morning, Behbudi infused their daily life with a subtle yet persistent invitation to contemplate mortality, chance, and community.
Later re-performed as part of the nasszellflux festival (Vienna, 2022), SUPPER 2 transforms everyday dining, mundane objects, and social interaction into a vehicle for retraining our perceptual listening. By converting a meal into a lived acoustic score, the installation position noise, eating, and silence not as mere chaos, but as a collective, spontaneous composition responding to the fragile nature of existence.
Instruction of the piece:
Invite people for a supper; maybe 10 people. Prepare one or more tables. Bring some plates with food and some other plates with sound makers; you may put bicycle bells and horns in some plates. People may eat, make sounds and/or do nothing.
Any supper can be our last supper. It’s a matter of probability, but it’s very serious.

And this plan that comes with the instruction:
(LAST BUT NOT LEAST: SUPPER 2)

At the nasszellflux event (Vienna, 2022), curated by Georg Nussbaumer and centered on a historical reinterpretation of the works of the Fluxus movement, the piece “Supper 2” experienced a different context of encountering the idea. Nussbaumer, himself a leading figure in the connection of music, physical materials, and the performing arts, placed the work alongside the historic event scores of John Cage, Yoko Ono, and Alison Knowles. In this modern, interdisciplinary context, the orderly arrangement of the meal and the simultaneous presence of food and sound-making objects on the table appeared as a new reading of the disruptive traditions of the 1960s; An encounter in which the boundary between the living space of Vienna's private baths, the social ritual of eating, and the ontological concepts of death awareness and probability was challenged in an interactive and audio format.
Mehdi Behbudi’s project “Last but not least Supper 2” (2021) is an interdisciplinary intervention at the border between conceptual music, ritual art and ontological philosophy. Formed in the context of the global pandemic crisis and at the foot of the Hyrcanian forests (House No. 4 / Darvaze Tehran Residency) and later recreated at the nasszellflux event (Vienna, 2022), the work deconstructs the usual approach to “feasting”. If “dinner” in the history of human culture is a symbol of solitude, continuity of life, collective cohesion and the domestication of time, Behboudi transforms it into something suspended, fragile and unavoidable by introducing the element of probability and instruction.
In the structured arrangement of the work, the dining table is the scene of the confrontation of two completely different sign systems:
The organic sign (food): the representation of swallowing, the process of absorption, the relief of survival anxiety, and the material. Food here symbolizes “being in the world” in its simplest biological form.
The mechanical sign (sound-making objects): bicycle bells, tire honks, and horn honks are seemingly alien and incongruous to the ritual of eating. They impose urban noise, alarm, mechanization, and interruption on the quiet matrix of the banquet.
The placement of these two materials on equal plates makes the banal sound, and the sound material and consumable. The audience at this table is confronted with a density of signification: the choice between swallowing (silence/swallowing) or spitting out (sound/alarm).
A reworking of the Fluxus tradition and the prescriptive works (from George Brecht to John Cage and Yoko Ono), it offers a pure form of phenomenology of time. In “Dinner 2,” the score is not a fixed notated document but a “behavioral possibility”:
“Invite people to dinner… guests can eat, make sounds, or do nothing.”
The morning distribution of these postcards behind the doors of the rooms of the lodge in the Hyrcanian forests was a prescient act that identified “rehearsal time” with “lived time.” Without exercising the power of direction, the artist injects structure and then withdraws. Agency is left entirely to the subjects (the guests). This freedom of action creates a moral suspense: am I disturbing another’s solitude by ringing the bell? Am I, by my silence, the absence of a sound possibility?
The key sentence of the text of the work; “Every dinner could be our last dinner. It is a discussion of possibilities, but it is also very serious” is a point of gravity for this instruction.
The piece is a reference to the existence of the near-death. When every dinner could be the end, the present moment is removed from the state of “everyday and calendar time” and transformed into a critical and qualitative time.
The presence of 10 people at a table with multiple options (eating, making noise, silence) produces countless structural combinations. The sudden sounds of a horn or a bicycle bell are points of entropy in the system; unpredictable jumps in a numerical pattern that show that life is a thermodynamic system on the verge of collapse or phase change.
“Last but not least: Dinner 2” is not a piece about performing music, but about “hearing possibility.” By juxtaposing the simplest biological behaviors (chewing, swallowing, silence) with mechanical vocal behaviors (honking, ringing), Behbudi places us in a position to confront “uncertainty.” The work reminds us that art can occur in the form of a simple postcard, a table setting, or a sudden honking sound amidst the laughter of a banquet; a sound that recalls the being, finitude, and precarious beauty of the present moment.
