This collaborative performance by Matbakh Duo (Mehdi Behbudi and Faezeh Bakhtiar) constructs a system in which light, sound, image, and body operate as a single instrument for musical production.
At its core lies a simple analog oscillator generating a triangle wave, controlled through six light-sensitive sensors. Four sensors are attached to the surface of a projection screen, while two are concealed within the performer’s hands. Simultaneously, a sequence of grayscale images ranging from black to white is projected onto the screen; images that function not as background, but as an active component of the sound-producing mechanism.
At the beginning, changes in light and image alone shape the sonic behavior of the work. With the entrance of the performer, the body becomes part of the circuit. Its movement in front of the screen casts shadows over the sensors, altering the trajectory of sound. The opening and closing of the hands, shifts in posture, and spatial displacement are also translated into sonic variation through the hidden hand sensors.
In this performance, the body is not the performer of an instrument, but the instrument itself. Sound emerges from the interaction between image, light, and the performer’s physical presence. The boundary between performer, device, and environment dissolves, and music becomes the result of a continuously negotiated relation between these elements.
The simple triangle-wave oscillator provides only a minimal framework. The musical structure of the piece arises instead from the interaction between the visual artist, the performer, and the light conditions of the space. Each shadow may alter, amplify, or replace a sound.
“Music for triangles and 6 sensitive spots” is an attempt to relocate musicianship from direct contact with an object to an experience grounded in presence—where light becomes audible and the body functions as a medium for the formation of sound.
Music for Triangles and 6 Sensitive Spots is far more than an interactive media installation; it is a critical manifesto and a visceral dissection of agency, surveillance, control, and resistance in an era dominated by digital hegemony and disciplinary systems. In this interdisciplinary collaboration, Mehdi Behbudi and Faezeh Bakhtiar construct a space where analog technology, visual art, and corporeal physiology converge in a tense, revelatory dialectic that shifts the traditional boundaries between human and apparatus.
Aesthetically, the piece roots itself radically in the traditions of minimalism and conceptual art. The deliberate choice of a "triangle wave" as the sonic foundation and backbone of the work is a testament to this framework. This wave, which due to its lean nature, restricted harmonics, and relatively soft frequency lacks the aggressive, abrasive complexities of modern synthesizers, functions as an acoustic blank canvas or a sonic vacuum waiting to be inseminated by the presence of the "Other." By relinquishing ultimate control of this naked wave to the visual artist's shifting grayscale spectrum and the performer’s unpredictable movements, the work fundamentally subverts the traditional authority and hegemony of the composer as the "absolute creator and dictator of the piece." Here, Behbudi, as the system designer, does not compose a rigid, premeditated sonic object; instead, he orchestrates a "sonic state of becoming" and a living ecosystem whose acoustic destiny is forged in real-time within the immediate context of the event.
This minimalist formalism, in its social layer, reflects the contemporary human condition in its confrontation with an algorithmic world. In a society where the human body is routinely commodified, tracked, and reduced to digital codes, statistics, and data by corporate and institutional algorithms, this performance reclaims the body as an unpredictable, material, and inherently flawed/living medium. The four light-sensitive sensors fixed to the screen and the two concealed within the performer's hands symbolize our vital frequencies and points of contact with the external world and its enveloping institutional frameworks. Clad entirely in white, the performer initially appears absorbed by the screen—the system itself—as if her body were merely a component of the architecture of power and the mechanism of image reproduction. Yet, as she initiates movement and intervenes in the space, she disrupts the order dictated by the visual projections. This serves as a powerful social metaphor for modern existence: we are deeply embedded and assimilated within the system, yet through our somatic fluctuations, our individuality, and our kinetic deviations, we retain the power to sabotage and alter the machine's ultimate output.
Another dimension of this performance manifests in the dialectic between "shadow" and "light." In modern political theory, particularly Foucault’s notions, structures of power exert dominance through "absolute illumination"—enforced transparency, aggressive exposure, and omnipresent surveillance. In this setting, the visual artist projects light, and the apparatus (the oscillator) is programmed to sustain its mechanical monologue based on that exposure. However, the performer executes a profoundly political act of corporeal resistance by physically stepping into this luminous onslaught and "casting a shadow." By strategically darkening the sensors, she interrupts the machine's default trajectory, jeopardizes its frequency stability, and forces her own experimental, human voice upon the rigid system.
The act of concealing the remaining two sensors within closed fists, coupled with the continuous opening and closing of her hands, becomes a poignant metaphor for underground resistance, secrecy, and the struggle to reclaim control over the frequency of either oppression or liberation. The body, in Music for Triangles and 6 Sensitive Spots, subverts and expropriates the mechanical apparatus in favor of human expressiveness, demonstrating that even within the most minimalist and restricted spaces, by relying on the sensitive spots of awareness and movement, one can destabilize and transfigure the dominant frequency of the world.
