Stoned Oscillations (2024)
is a live electroacoustic performance and interactive acoustic assemblage exploring the phenomenology of microsounds and sonic materialism. In this work, Mehdi Behbudi introduces human-made construction materials—such as concrete blocks, bricks, cement, and plaster—into glass vessels filled with water. Hydrophones attached to the bottom of the vessels capture the physical process of water penetrating the porous structure of the stones and the gradual release of trapped air, translating it into a dynamic, unpredictable live soundscape. The acoustic "breathing" and saturation of these materials yield evolving textures—ranging from slow percussive rhythms to continuous hums—that naturally decay into silence.
The piece premiered in November 2024 at the 8box Platform as part of the festival "A Sonic Journey from the Renaissance to the Contemporary." This iteration featured a multimedia choreography bridging the virtual and the physical: visual artist Ali Molavi initiated the sequence by digitally adding a stone to an empty jar projected on screen, prompting multi-media artist Amir Taheri to submerge the corresponding physical stone into water on stage. In January 2025, the work was re-performed at the Tehran Music Museum during the 2nd Contemporary Music Magazine Festival by the Matbakh Sound Ensemble under Behbudi's direction. Stripped of visual projections, this performance refocused entirely on pure electroacoustic improvisation, creating a stark conceptual contrast between the museum’s grand piano and the raw, tactile "sound kitchen" of water, stone, and hydrophones.
Performance instruction:
Find some man-made rocks, such as cement blocks, bricks, clay blocks, concrete blocks, plaster and mortar, and the like. Find a cylindrical or cubic glass container the size of the rocks.
Make some hydrophones and attach them to the bottom of the container and into the water. Slowly lower the rocks one by one into the water and place them on the hydrophone to pick up the most sound. Now you can hear the sound from the water; right under the rocks.
Turn up the volume and listen to the sound of the rocks getting wet. Listen to the sound of the air gradually escaping from the rocks. Some rocks are slower and more percussive, some faster and more howling, and some are like a complete soundscape.
Each rock slowly falls silent after a few minutes of varying changes in intensity, color, pitch, and rhythm.
You can use several containers of water for a live performance and capture and combine the sound of two or more stones at the same time.

The project “Stoned Oscillations” (2024) by Mehdi Behbudi and the ensemble “Matbakh e sowt” (meaning cookhouse for sound) is a meeting point of experimental sound art, live electroacoustics and critical materialism. In this piece, Behbudi directs the auditory attention from standard acoustic instruments or sound synthesis traditions towards “microsounds” and the sonic encounter with hard and mundane building materials. Concrete, brick, plaster and cement blocks, which are known as symbols of solidity, stillness and the domestication of space in architecture, when exposed to water, abandon their silent nature and become “speaking” and breathing organisms.
The technical and semantic core of the piece is based on the immersion of hydrophones in water. The hydrophone here is not just a recording device, but an “acoustic microscope” that expands the boundaries of human auditory perception.
Man-made rocks have porous textures. Water entering these hidden cavities pushes out trapped air. The physical process of bubbles escaping creates a spectrum of slow percussion sounds, frequency howls, and atmospheric textures.
In its first performance in 8box platform in Tehran, the work took on multimedia dimensions under the simultaneous direction of three agencies (Mehdi Behbudi, Amir Taheri, and Ali Molavi). The performance was based on a conceptual choreography between the projection screen and the real scene:
Image on the screen (Ali) ──> Issuing a digital command and adding a stone to the image (Ali) ──> Reaction in the real scene (Amir) ──> Putting the stone in the water (Amir) ──> Receiving sounds, mixing and playing (Mehdi).
This sequence questions the boundary between “idea/image” and “material event”. The image on the screen is not a representation of the past, but a trigger for a real event. Sound is born when the digital sets the material in motion.
The transfer of the piece to the hall of the Tehran Music Museum and the abandonment of the visual part took the work to a deeper layer of sound experience.
In both performances, the presence of the grand piano in the background (apparently a technical necessity), as an institutionalized icon of classical music, in contrast to the stones and water containers of Matbakh e sowt, created a critical reading.
Piano: tuned instrument, mathematical intervals, doctrine of control and specific steps.
Matbakh e sowt: raw material, uncontrollable frequencies, organic entropy and composition based on probability and the physics of matter.
After a few minutes of oscillation, changing sound color and rhythm, each stone reaches silence as its cavities are completely filled with water. This downward progression has an entropic quality:
The sound life of the stone = instability and resistance to absorption.
The silence of the stone = thermodynamic equilibrium and saturation.
This gradual silence is a reminder of finitude and a metaphor for the erosion and decay of man-made structures in the face of nature.
Stoned Oscillations are a ritual of hearing the inaudible. Mehdi Behbudi and Matbakh e sowt Ensemble make the cold material of architecture vibrate by transforming glass containers into sound laboratories. This piece reminds the audience that even the most rigid and silent objects around us hold a history of time, air, and frequency within them; a history that only requires a little water, listening, and a hydrophone to be heard!
