It all begins with a mysterious encounter. In front of a large industrial shed, a large, black door stands out, with only two words engraved on it: “Simple Reception.” There is no artist’s name or statement of enlightenment. This conscious illusion places the viewer in a state of suspension between reality and art; to the point where some might actually expect a traditional reception ceremony in the heart of this industrial space. This beginning is the first layer of the work: preparing the mind to enter a ritual in which the “reception material” is not food, but vibration and noise.
Upon entering the shed, the viewer is confronted with a massive and disciplined figure: 11 three-meter steel tables arranged in three neat rows. The mathematical order of this installation, with distances of about two meters between the tables, opens a path for walking and penetrating the heart of the work. Each table is equipped with 27 adjustable legs, which are screwed down with millimetre precision to place the mouths of containers of different heights on an absolutely level surface. This levelling of the mouths is an engineering necessity to achieve a poetic goal: so that the speaker carried by the robotic arms can pass over them in a “lip-to-lip” path, as if touching the mouths of each container, and flow the noise with maximum concentration into their hearts. In this work, white noise acts as an “invisible liquid” that the robotic arms that move back and forth pour into the containers. But here’s the key point: contrary to initial perception, it is not the material of the container (glass, metal or ceramic) that creates the sound, but the “empty volume” inside each container that shapes the noise. When the speaker passes through the mouth of a container, the pure white noise is filtered; the empty space of the container acts as a resonant chamber, giving the shapeless noise its “subtlety” and color. Each container absorbs some frequencies and amplifies others, depending on the dimensions and depth of its empty space; it is as if each empty volume imprints its own sonic signature on the flowing noise, and the audience witnesses the transformation of a uniform signal into a spectrum of diverse resonances.
This installation works without the presence of an audience; but its perfection is in the presence of a “guest”. By walking between the tables, the audience becomes one of the main pieces of this orchestra. The human body and clothes are surfaces that absorb sound. The presence of the crowd in the hall changes the reverberation time of the space and, by absorbing high frequencies, makes the sound warmer and lower. As the guests move along the path, “acoustic shadows” are created; each person’s body physically blocks some of the sounds from reaching others, and thus, each audience member, consciously or unconsciously, recreates part of the sound architecture of the environment with their physical presence. But perhaps most importantly, in this work, the audience determines the angle and distance of their encounter with the work and receives a different composition depending on where they are standing. Although the movement of the arms is repetitive and mechanical, due to the difference in the empty volume of the containers and the constant change in the physical position of the audience, no two moments of the work are heard the same. This work is an invitation to “hear a phenomenon”; where we learn to listen to the process of “receiving” itself, rather than searching for music. “Simple Reception” shows how a machine “pours” noise and how an empty volume “receives” it and gives it identity. It is a metaphor for hospitality at its deepest ontological level: accepting what is formless and giving it form and meaning in the silence of an abandoned shed. Ultimately, the most beautiful sound is born not in the noise itself, but in the moment of its encounter with the empty space within the container and the presence of the guest.
Work in progress; final tunings.
First 3D realizations of the idea.
In sound-based art, sound is often treated as an expressive medium or a musical extension of technology. Yet in Humble Reception (Paziraei Sadeh) by Mehdi Behbudi, sound ceases to be an instrument and becomes a living material—a presence that takes form through contact with the world. The work dissolves the boundary between engineering, sculpture, and perception, and poses a fundamental question: Can sound have a vessel?
Behbudi uses white noise as a kind of invisible fluid, a formless substance that flows through mechanical precision. On eleven steel tables, rows of drinking vessels—glasses, mugs, bowls, even teapots—stand in quiet alignment. A robotic arm carrying a small speaker moves rhythmically above them, releasing a constant stream of noise.
Each vessel, through its unique geometry and volume, filters the sound differently, subtracting or amplifying certain frequencies. The result is a field of subtle tonal variations—what could be called the sonic portrait of each vessel. In this gesture, sound becomes as material as glass or metal: not merely vibration, but a visible presence that takes shape in relation to form.
Here, listening becomes an act of material encounter. The noise is neither outside nor inside; it emerges between—in the fleeting moment when air meets surface, when vibration is received and transformed.
The robotic arm’s slow back-and-forth motion establishes a kind of meditative rhythm. Its repetitive gesture recalls the structure of ritual: a mechanical devotion to movement and return. The artist uses technology not for spectacle or control, but to perform a simple act of hospitality: the machine “pours” sound, and the vessels “receive” it.
This mechanical exchange transforms the familiar act of serving into a sonic ritual—an acoustic hospitality in which matter becomes host to vibration. The work thereby extends beyond the domain of sound art into a philosophy of listening, where perception itself is shared between human and non-human agents.
The title, Humble Reception, encapsulates the work’s ethos. Humility here does not mean lack of complexity, but rather a disciplined simplicity—a sensitivity to the quiet beauty of ordinary things. Behbudi’s use of modest materials—metal, glass, code, and noise—creates an experience that resists excess and spectacle.
This aesthetic of humility stands as a counterpoint to the over-saturated landscape of contemporary media art. In a world of amplification, Humble Reception invites us to the opposite gesture: to listen carefully, to attend to the smallest resonances, to let simplicity speak.
Although the robotic movements and sonic emissions repeat continuously, no two moments are the same. Each vessel responds uniquely; each pass of the arm alters the field slightly. Within this oscillation between sameness and change, Behbudi constructs what could be called a post-structural soundscape: meaning arises not from stability, but from the infinitesimal differences between repetitions.
The installation thus enacts listening as a process—unstable, contextual, and relational. It shows that every act of reception is simultaneously an act of transformation.
In Humble Reception, white noise circulates between machine, vessel, and space. It becomes a choreography of resonance where the invisible finds form through the act of being received. Behbudi moves sound away from musicality toward phenomenology—toward the experience of sound as shape, surface, and relation.
Here, to listen is to see. The ear becomes an eye. Behbudi’s work reminds us that to receive is already to create—that sound, in its humblest form, is always an act of becoming.
