Music: Mehdi Behbudi
Voice: Shaghayegh Bagheri
Installation Design: Mehdi Behbudi
The Underwor[l]d is a long-duration sound and light installation by Mehdi Behbudi, composed around the intersection of language, number, and space. The work examines how minimal structures — a single human voice, a few tones, a beam of light — can generate vast perceptual and temporal experiences.
The sound element of the installation is based on the six Farsi vowels — A, E, O, AA, I, and U — recorded by Shaghayegh Bagheri, an Iranian vocalist known for her collaborations with contemporary composers and electronic musicians. Bagheri’s voice carries a rare historical and cultural resonance: the presence of a female voice emerging from a context where public female singing has long been restricted. In The Underwor[l]d, her voice is stripped of words and emotion, transformed into pure vowels — the foundations of speech and meaning — and thus becomes both a symbol of presence and erasure.
Each vowel was sung across the twelve semitones of an octave, producing seventy-two short recordings. These fragments are reorganized by an autonomous playback system designed by Behbudi. The system follows a structure derived from prime numbers: each vowel changes pitch at a distinct prime interval — O every 7 seconds, E every 11, A every 13, AA every 17, U every 19, and I every 23 seconds. This logic creates six independent temporal cycles that only realign after 7,436,429 seconds — approximately 86 days. During this entire span, the combination of vowels constantly shifts, forming harmonic relationships that never perceptibly repeat.
The playback system, developed specifically for this piece, allows the artist to address any exact moment within the 86-day continuum. This ensures that, despite the enormous temporal scale, every second of the work can be accessed, rehearsed, or resumed precisely. The sound, therefore, operates simultaneously as a mathematical construct and a living temporal organism, unfolding beyond human attention spans and everyday durations.
The spatial presentation of the work mirrors its acoustic concept. In an empty industrial space, a simple metal chair stands at the center. Beneath it, a single light placed on the floor passes by a cut in the seat, projecting onto a brick wall the shadow of an architectural arch — an illusion reminiscent of a temple or mosque entrance. On either side of the room, two frameless, aged speakers rest directly on the ground, each dimly lit by narrow light beams. From these “broken” speakers, the evolving voice of Bagheri resonates — fragile, luminous, and continuous.
As visitors enter the space, they first encounter the monumental shadow of the arch and the drone-like sound field surrounding it. Gradually, they discover the simplicity of its construction — that the entire architecture of sound and image emerges from minimal, almost fragile means. The moment of realization becomes a critical part of the experience: the perception of scale collapses, and the audience’s awareness oscillates between illusion and origin, between the monumental and the minimal.
The Underwor[l]d operates on several intertwined layers — linguistic, mathematical, and perceptual. The title itself carries a double meaning: the “underworld” as a mythic, hidden realm, and the “under-word,” a space beneath language, beneath meaning. It also alludes to the world beneath numbers, where prime sequences — indivisible and infinite — shape the structure of time and sound.
Through this intricate yet minimal system, Behbudi creates a work that questions perception, duration, and the human relation to infinity. The Underwor[l]d is less a composition than a temporal condition — an environment where sound and light continuously generate each other, where a single voice unfolds into an endless architecture of time.
